Created by Roy Huggins, 77 Sunset Strip began airing on ABC on October 10, 1958. The detective series was filmed in black-and-white format and was produced by Warner Bros. Television. The popularity of the TV show paved the way for the development of other shows, including Hawaiian Eye, Surfside 6 and Bourbon Street Beat.

The crime drama television series is about two private detectives working in a detective agency located at 77 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Stuart “Stu” Bailey, portrayed by Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., and Jeff Spencer, played by Roger Smith, formerly served as secret agents for the government who teamed up to solve various cases. Aside from Zimbalist and Smith, Edd Byrnes starred as Gerald Lloyd "Kookie" Kookson III, a valet who ended up as a member of the detective agency after helping Stu and Jeff solve their cases.

Several actors appeared as guest stars on the show, including Roger Moore, William Shatner and Mary Tyler Moore. Running for six seasons with a total of 206 episodes, 77 Sunset Strip made its final airing on February 7, 1964.
